Diary Entry #3
I want to go home but the man says I canât. He says that this is my home now. He says that I have to stay here forever. I donât want to. I hate it here. It smells funny. It doesnât look like my other home - the one with the big backyard. Here thereâs no backyard to play in. Iâm not allowed to play, anyway. When I cry the man tells me to stop.
But I canât.
Iâm sad.
I canât stop crying.
Chapter Thirteen
February 11, Present Day
âYou better have a good excuse. Iâm on my third coffee. Iâll be buzzed all day. Besides that, Richardâs been blowing up my phone. He wants me to come home and relieve him because Phoebeâs a wreck. I told him if I can handle those kids all afternoon without a break after working with other peopleâs kids all morning, surely he can take care of them for a couple of hours. Seriously.â
Hannah sat at a small table, her back to the wall. Amy slid into the chair across from Hannah, inhaling the aromatic scent of coffee beans and pastries. âWow. Youâre pretty wired.â She grabbed the mug off the table and took a generous gulp of the lukewarm coffee.
âItâs probably not hot anymore. Itâs been sitting there awhile.â
âThatâs okay. Youâll never believe who showed up just as I was leaving.â Amy stripped off her scarf and jacket and slung them over the back of her chair.
âWillow?â Hannah leaned forward, elbows on the table and rested her chin in her hand. Her sleek platinum blonde hair spilled down her arm, the ends brushing the slick surface of the table.
âNo, but close. She actually showed up last night.â
âShe did? How is she?â
Amy shook her head. âNot so great. Sheâs sleeping right now.â The door swung open behind Amy and a rush of cold air swept over her back. A group of chattering women entered, their heels clicking on the floor.
Hannahâs eyes widened. âYou let her spend the night? Do you think thatâs wise? I mean, how much do you really know about her?â
âI know sheâs in the same place I once was.â
âWell, thatâs encouraging.â
âWhat do you mean?â The espresso machine roared to life, emitting the smell of bitter coffee beans into the air.
âAre you forgetting I knew you back then? Thatâs not exactly a ringing endorsement.â
Amy picked up her mug again, took another gulp. She noticed Hannahâs hands shaking. âYou should probably stop drinking coffee now.â
âGood idea.â Hannah shoved her cup away.
âAmy?â A woman with cropped chestnut hair wearing yoga pants and a sweatshirt approached the table.
âGwen? Wow, you look great.â Amy stood to embrace her. âItâs been forever since Iâve seen you.â
âI know. How have you been?â Gwen smiled, pushing her rosy cheeks up into her chocolate brown eyes.
âGreat. And you?â
âPretty good.â
Hannah cleared her throat.
âOh, Gwen, this is my friend Hannah.â As they shook hands Amy explained the connection. âGwen used to go to the recovery group. Hannahâs actually the one who pushed me to go in the first place.
